Speaker A:

Lord, if it's you, Peter replied, tell me to come to you on the water. Come, Jesus said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and beginning to sink, cried out, Lord, save me. Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. You have little faith, he said. Why did you doubt? Matthew 1428 31 at the Lord's call, Peter stepped out of the boat and, finding the water firm enough to support him, started walking in the water toward Jesus. But then Peter began to sink. It happened when he saw the wind and the waves. It happened when his fears replaced his faith. It happened when he took his eyes off Jesus. Like Peter, we have been called to walk in faith often on water with the wind whipping around and the waves splashing in our face. We have been told to have faith in Christ and in his career. But troubles come. Winds swirl around us. Water crashes over the sides of the boat. Fears don't just sneak in, they blast through the door. We start to worry about what will happen to us, what will become of us. And like Peter, we begin to sink. We sink when we focus on troubles and trials that we face at the expense of our faith. We sink when we fail to keep our daily appointments with the Lord. We sink when we are consumed by wrong priorities and activities. We sink when we take our eyes off Jesus. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, says the writer of the book of Hebrews. Let us keep our eyes focused on him. The one thing, the only thing that keeps us walking on water is keeping our eyes on Jesus.
