Sky Stuff

Speaker B:

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Psalm 19, verse one sky stuff has always thrilled me. I try to see every solar and lunar eclipse, every meteor shower, and every comet sighting. Back in the mid 1980s, I got to see Haley's comet. In more recent years, I was fascinated by the hailbop comet. About a month ago, I watched an asteroid that came close to planet earth shooting stars streaking across the night sky, constellations drawing pictures, the moon and all its phases. These are wonders of the night that never grow old to me. I confess that I get biblical when I see stuff like that. I look at the sky and David's words resonate in me. The heavens declare the glory of God, and the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Looking at the night sky gives perspective. Problems seem far less significant somehow when we realize that God created the universe. So he most certainly can deal with our troubles and woes and how small we seem when compared to the glory that surrounds us. No wonder David sighed, when I consider your heavens the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you have put in place, what is man that you are mindful of him? Abraham Lincoln is credited with saying, I suppose a man could look at the dirt and say, there is no God, but how can a man look into the stars and say the same? What a mighty God we serve. I stand in awe of him. Go look into the sky tonight. The answer to all of your needs is found there, not in the stars, but in the God who created them and sustains them by his word.
