Queen for a Day

Speaker A:

Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise I may have too much and disown you and say, who is the Lord? Or I may become poor and steal and so dishonor the name of my God. Proverbs 38 nine do you remember the old game show called Queen for a day? Queen for a Day was a radio and television game show that fascinated the american public. It became a tv sensation in 1956. The live show began when the host asked the studio audience, would you like to be queen for a day? Then contestants were introduced and interviewed. Each contestant was asked about the financial and emotional hardships she had been through and asked what she needed to make her life easier. Often the request was for medical care for a sick child, washing machine or a kitchen appliance. The winner was decided by the audience using an applause meter. The worse a contestant's story, the more likely the audience was to choose her. The winner was draped in a robe and given a crown along with a and roses. A list of prizes was then announced, including what she had requested, along with some extras like silverware or clothing. Those not chosen were given smaller but no less amazing gifts. How would you answer if asked what you would like that would make your life easier? In the 1950s, contestants asked for things like washing machines, stoves, or a new mattress set. Todays contestants are more likely to ask for things like vacations to the Bahamas, new cars, or a truck full of cash. Im not sure what that means exactly, and im not passing judgment, but it is certainly an interesting observation. Talk about interesting observations. Have you ever heard of a guy by the name of Agar? Agar lived in the time of King Solomon and is mentioned in the Bible. In fact, the Holy Spirit even used him to write part of our Bible. But Agar is recognized even less than the old game shows like Queen for a day. You'll find Agar mentioned at the top of proverbs 30, the chapter in our Bible that he wrote. He said some pretty neat stuff, including this little prayer in verses eight and nine. Give me neither poverty nor rich, but give me only my daily bread. Lord, don't give me too little or too much, just give me enough. Not so much that I end up worrying that it will be lost or stolen. Not so much that I no longer depend upon you, but not so little that I fret and stew and worry all the time either. Just give me what I need for today, for the here and now. That's a good prayer. Lord, give me enough. Not too much, not too little, but just enough just what I need. Isn't that a prayer? We should all pray.
